Hi Folks,
My name is Bonnie. I live in Ontario near Guelph. I found this forum while checking out more information on Chris Irwin. I have his book "Dancing with your Dark Horse", and I know that Anne Gage lives not far away, so it seemed a good idea to sign on.

I have had horses since I was 19, and I am now 63. I have always had Arabs, but when my last guy died last year at 20, I looked for a more laid back breed and ended up buying a pregnant Haflinger mare. She is named Folly, and is now 13. She is very quiet, in fact too quiet, and I am working on connecting with her in hopes of getting some spark back into her. I do not think she was abused, but I sense that she has simply shut down and feels that people have nothing much to offer her. I have not yet ridden her, because I just don't feel that bond between us that would indicate that she wants to work with me. I know I could stick a bit in her mouth and a saddle on her back and she would probably behave herself, but I have no desire to do that to her until she feels that she can get a better deal with me than she has ever known. It just doesn't feel right, yet.

Her lovely yearling daughter, Chance, is completely different. She is sunny-tempered, open and friendly, with a lot more fire and dance in her. She poses other challenges, since her attention span is short and yet she has a lot to learn over the next few years. I am here in hopes of finding some answers to the questions I have about how to bring out the best in my golden horses.

I am currently working with my horses at liberty quite a lot, and have studied the methods of Carolyn Resnick, Klaus Ferdinand Hempfling, and others whose views, I think, are compatible with Chris Irwin's. Chris knows body language, and I am very keen to learn as much as I can about communicating with horses. This feels like the right place to learn it. I look forward to being part of this community.

Cheers,
Bonnie

Hi, Bonnie.  Welcome to the Forum.  I am very close to you - near Orangeville.  If you are interested in learning more about Chris' methods you have come to the right place.  Please feel free to contact me directly as well.  Chris is coming to Barrie in September for a 3 day clinic.  It is almost full, but even if you can't participate, auditing is a great way to learn. He will also be in King (west of Newmarket) for another 3 day event (details still being confirmed). For more info on these events, visit the events page of www.chrisirwin.com or email info@chrisirwin.com  I am also giving a 2 day clinic at the same location on August 28-29 (along with Terri Bowhey).  For more information about that, contact me by email at confidenthorsemanship@gmail.com or visit my website www.annegage.com

Cheers

Anne
